It has been well recognised that prostate cancer
does not receive the attention and support from government in research
and screening, recently published figures show £72million on beast
cancer research, yet just over £9million going into finding a cure
for prostate cancer. This lack of funding is costing men their lives.
The reason put forward for a lack of interest in the screening procedure
is that the current PSA testing is unreliable and can only be used as an
indicator. With this in mind we must still make men aware of the cancer
risks and urge them to have the test. There is also the question of how
regularly these tests are carried out, currently 12 months is the norm but
there is a view this should be every 6 months. The need for detailed records
from a national survey will underpin this vital decision and resources
should be
made available to support the healthcare plan.
We urgently need a research program for a
reliable non invasive testing procedure
Please talk to friends and colleagues about this
subject, make people aware of how bad the current system is, as a patient
your family will soon become aware of your situation but we need support
from everyone in our communities. |
